Whether you’re a 9–5er in a hybrid work environment, or you’re a freelancer or a coach popping into coffee shops between meetings and working from home, remote workers and jobs are here to stay. For the foreseeable future, at least.
When the pandemic hit, I turned my studio Brooklyn apartment in East Williamsburg, NY, into a place where I could do my work virtually, sleep and live. I did this without having to rely on outside resources in a time where there was no other option. In-person, at least.
I worked on was nailing the work-from-home environment in a way that worked for me. I needed to make my studio into my workspace to run a business from home. I created space to run an online coaching business, launch a podcast episode a week, virtually training clients, and program for my clients in the comfort of my home.
HOW I DID IT
I hustled. I pulled all-nighters. I arguably did the most trial and error I’ve done in a short time frame, but the reward was worth the work for me. I figured out how to nail the lighting while recording content in my studio for my YouTube channel and my Instagram. The purpose for doing this was to empower other like-minded individuals to stay positive during a time of change, frustration, and fear. I strived to help others stay sane in the comfort of their surroundings when most of us had no choice.
I conducted virtual group fitness classes to keep a community alive!
I transitioned all of my in-person clients to virtual training clients, which turned out to stay.
I blogged every day. I worked on planning every week out to get one thing done a week, then backtracking the baby steps each week to figure out ways to attain the end of the week’s more significant goal.
Running was and is my saving grace. I made a personal goal to run a sub-3 marathon and train for it outside of my work. Having a personal plan allowed me to spend more time focusing on my business rather than in it. I forced myself to create structure around my training, which helped my mental health throughout the pandemic.
HOW I EXPANDED MY VIRTUAL ONLINE COACHING BUSINESS
I reached out to three runners within the running online community daily. I found these individuals on platforms like Instagram (my main go-to where I’ve established a strong community of runners) and sometimes Facebook and Reddit feed. I always found exciting topics of conversation that were commonalities across these platforms. Then, I honed in on finding a problem and filling that gap for runners struggling to find a solution to a specific issue discussed! Sounds more straightforward than it seems. Trust me on that!
WHAT I DID, AND DIDN’T EXPECT FROM THE TRANSITION
I did not expect to be able to make a full-time living as an online business owner. I’d be lying if I said I did. I didn’t know what to expect, but I changed how I went about my daily routine. Instead of harping on the wrong things, I focused on finding the positive things every day and making the most out of those things. Let the journey continue! Fast forward two years, and today, I have the opportunity of coaching upwards of 21+ private clients focusing on their running and nutrition programming, in addition to establishing two key brand partnerships, establishing a local running club for aspiring runners to seasoned marathon runners, and an outdoor Bootcamp with one of my fitness friends in the industry at the local park nearby.
WHERE I AM TODAY AND WHERE I PLAN ON GOING
Today, I plan to help nine first-time marathon runners finish the Fall-Winter 2021–2022 Marathons Injury-Free and Strong!
We’ll focus on the next thing once we establish this major milestone and moment together.
One thing at a time.
